Oman is one of the most fascinating yet overlooked wildlife destinations in the Western Palearctic. Situated at the crossroads of Arabia, Africa and Asia, the country’s diverse landscapes support an extraordinary variety of wildlife, from desert-adapted reptiles and elusive mammals to spectacular birds of prey and rare endemic species.
Over the past several years, I have explored many of Oman’s most remarkable habitats, from the juniper-clad mountains of Jabal Akhdar and the rugged cliffs of the Hajar Mountains to the lush monsoon landscapes of Dhofar and the remote deserts and wadis that connect them. These journeys have revealed a country far richer in wildlife than many visitors realise.
Among the highlights have been encounters with Arabian chameleons hidden amongst the greenery of Dhofar, Verreaux’s Eagles soaring above mountain escarpments, striped hyenas emerging under the cover of darkness and, after years of searching, the remarkable Persian Horned Viper. Alongside these iconic species, Oman supports a wealth of geckos, lizards, snakes, amphibians, mammals and birds, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Dhofar is one of Arabia’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. During the Khareef monsoon, the mountains of southern Oman transform into a landscape of mist, waterfalls and lush vegetation, supporting a unique assemblage of reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.

Stretching across northern Oman, the Hajar Mountains support some of the country’s most spectacular wildlife and scenery. From soaring Lappet-faced vultures and elusive Omani Owls to the remarkable Persian Horned Viper, these rugged mountains are a biodiversity hotspot at the heart of Arabia.
