I only had just over a week in Slovakia this past summer after having spent most of my holiday in Greece and the UK. However, some overcast conditions over a couple of days did allow some nice reptile observations and the weather made it worth going out for a look at this typically unproductive time of the year. Numerous smooth snakes (Coronella austriaca) really enjoyed the overcast days and they were observed together with the usual grass snake (Natrix natrix), dice snake (Natrix tessellata), and adder (Vipera berus). The Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus) occurs in the lowlands near the family house, but is very secretive in the summer months. I managed to find one under some trash where I had found them many times before. I also finally got to see the subspecies of sand lizard (Lacerta agilis argus), thanks to Andrej for showing me the spot.
